Impact of Extreme Coastal Processes and Flooding on the Stability of Coasts and Green-Grey Protection Structures
This project aims to develop an integrated and computationally efficient framework for predicting how waves, currents, coastal structures, sediment and groundwater respond together during extreme events. Coastal hydrodynamics, sediment processes, geotechnical engineering and climate science come together to investigate risks both above and below the seabed.
Research Approach
- A multi-physics model will couple wave, current, structural,
sediment and groundwater dynamics. - Controlled laboratory experiments, advanced numerical
modelling and analytical methods will examine seabed and
structural responses under severe conditions. - The research will establish quantitative thresholds for toe
scour, slope instability and seabed liquefaction, and translate
the findings into hybrid surrogate models and design guidance.
Why This Matters
- Provides a stronger scientific basis for assessing coastal and
green-grey protection systems under extreme conditions. - Supports the development of next-generation design criteria
suited to Singapore’s coastal environment. - Supports PUB’s long-term coastal and flood resilience planning
with design-ready evidence on hidden subsurface risks.
